Letterboxd is a social movie tracking app. People who love movies use it to track movies they have watched and movies they want to watch. It’s a huge hit with over eight million users.
We love Letterboxd, so two years ago, we decided to build the equivalent for restaurants – an app that would help foodies track restaurants, create lists, and see all their friends' favorite restaurants, all in one place.
How are we similar to Letterboxd?
1. Onboarding Flow
Truffle’s onboarding flow is designed to make it easy for users to populate their account.
We show a list of popular restaurants near you, and you can quickly press the Visited or To Do buttons for each restaurant on the list.
Similarly, Letterboxd has an amazing onboarding. When you first download Letterboxd, you see a bunch of popular movies.
You can mark each movie as Watched, Liked, or on your Watchlist.
When I first downloaded Letterboxd, I spent an hour going through their onboarding flow!
2. Social Feed
On both Truffle and Letterboxd, you can follow your friends and get a feed of all their activity! See their recommendations, their notes, and any lists they create for restaurants on Truffle and for movies on Letterboxd.
How are we different from Letterboxd?
1. The Map
On Truffle, every user gets a map that shows them all the restaurants they’ve tracked.
Here is my map: green represents places I’ve been, red are my favorites, and blue are my to do’s.
You can also click on any of your friends to see their tracked restaurants too!
Since movies are not associated with a physical location, Letterboxd does not have a map of movies, although that would be cool.
2. Automatic Tracking
On Truffle, you can set up integrations with apps like Resy and DoorDash to automatically track every restaurant you eat at.
Our most popular integration is our integration with Instagram. Anytime you post a restaurant on your Instagram story, we automatically track that restaurant for you on Truffle.
Letterboxd does not yet have automatic tracking, but it would be cool to integrate with Netflix, HBO and / or your AMC account to track each movie you watch automatically.
